Lake Tahoe East Shore 2026: New Trail Parking, Spooner Hub and U.S. 50 Repaving, and What They Mean for Incline Village and Glenbrook Homeowners
Lake Tahoe East Shore 2026 Construction Wrap-Up: How the East Shore Trail, Chimney Beach Parking, Spooner Summit Mobility Hub and U.S. 50 Repaving Affect Incline Village, Glenbrook and Lake Tahoe Luxury Real Estate
By Crystal Bauer, Certified Luxury Realtor® | eXp Realty
The Lake Tahoe East Shore 2026 construction season is officially in the books, and it was a big one. Between new trailhead parking near Incline Village, a rebuilt Chimney Beach and the final season of U.S. 50 repaving through Glenbrook, the Lake Tahoe East Shore looks noticeably different than it did last spring.
If you own, or hope to own, a home anywhere from Incline Village to Glenbrook and Zephyr Cove, these projects shape your daily drive, your summer weekends and, over time, the appeal of your property.
Here's a plain-English look at what got done, what's coming next and what it means for you.
What Happened on the Lake Tahoe East Shore in 2026?
On October 13, 2026, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and its partners announced the close of the summer construction season along Nevada State Route 28, the narrow two-lane scenic byway that connects Incline Village to Spooner Summit.
The goal of the work is simple: get cars off the dangerous highway shoulders, add safe trail access and transit, and protect lake clarity from erosion and stormwater runoff.
The partner list is long, including the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), the Tahoe Fund, Nevada Division of State Lands and Nevada State Parks.
New Parking at the East Shore Trailhead (Incline Village)
Crews added 38 new parking spaces just north of the existing 90-space paid lot at the East Shore Trailhead in Incline Village.
Nearby, an eroded roadside shoulder known as Rocky Point was restored and stabilized.
A Rebuilt Chimney Beach
Chimney Beach now has 130 parking spaces, a new East Shore Express transit stop, a lighted crosswalk, public restrooms and bear boxes.
Roadside parking there was reduced, which should make that stretch of SR 28 safer to drive.
Seasonal Paid Parking Arrives at Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor
Seasonal paid parking started this summer at Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor. According to TTD, the revenue goes back into the corridor to cover operations and maintenance.
What Is the Spooner Summit Mobility Hub?
The Spooner Summit Mobility Hub is one of the biggest pieces of the East Shore plan. The TRPA Governing Board approved it in August 2025, and NDOT is leading the project.
When finished, it's planned to include:
- A 250-space parking area with a pay kiosk, which TRPA describes as the largest lot on the corridor
- A transit hub with increased service
- The first permanent watercraft inspection station in the Tahoe Basin, for aquatic invasive species checks
- Real-time parking availability and reservation technology
- EV charging and infrastructure for electric buses
In 2026, crews completed site preparation, water quality infrastructure and paving for the 250-space lot. Restrooms, a transit shelter, the boat inspection facility and a crosswalk to Spooner Lake State Park are slated for next season.
TRPA's earlier timeline calls for the inspection station, parking lot and transit stop to open by fall 2027.
When Will the East Shore Trail Be Extended?
Today, the paved East Shore Trail runs about three miles from Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
Design is now underway on the next section, which TTD describes as a nearly two-mile shared-use path from Sand Harbor toward Chimney Beach, with emergency pullouts and scenic vistas.
That segment was boosted by a $24 million federal RAISE grant announced in June 2024. At the time, TRPA described a 1.75-mile extension from Sand Harbor to Thunderbird Cove. The newer TTD update uses "nearly two miles," so expect the final length and route to firm up as design wraps.
No construction start date has been announced for the extension yet.
What About Secret Harbor?
The Secret Harbor trailhead is set to grow from roughly 30 spaces to about 120, with restrooms, a transit stop, a vista point and stormwater improvements. Final design is expected in early 2027.
A new southbound transit shelter is also under construction on SR 28 just north of Lakeshore Drive in Incline Village.
What Did U.S. 50 Repaving Mean for Glenbrook and Zephyr Cove?
On the south end of the East Shore, NDOT ran the second and final season of its two-year U.S. 50 repaving project, which covers just over 13 miles from Stateline to the Spooner Summit Trailhead.
The 2026 season, which started April 27, added more than seven miles, including a one-mile Round Hill to Zephyr Cove section that wasn't paved in 2025. NDOT said the project was expected to be substantially complete this fall. Check NDOT for final status, since I couldn't confirm a formal completion notice as of this writing.
Safety Upgrades Between Spooner Summit and Glenbrook
- Double yellow lines creating a two-foot median separation between Spooner Summit and Glenbrook
- Centerline rumble strips in select areas, including Spooner Pass to Glenbrook
- Some guardrail upgraded to concrete barrier rail
- Concrete curbing and drainage improvements to reduce ponding
- A fiber optic trunk line for NDOT's communications network
The number of lanes didn't change. NDOT says about 26,000 drivers use this stretch of highway each day, so smoother pavement and better drainage should be welcome heading into winter.
What Do Lake Tahoe East Shore 2026 Improvements Mean for Homeowners, Buyers and Sellers?
Infrastructure news isn't flashy, but it matters. The East Shore is one of the most visited recreation corridors in the Lake Tahoe Basin, and how people get to its beaches affects everyone who lives nearby.
For Incline Village and Glenbrook Homeowners
Less roadside parking and more transit are designed to ease summer congestion on SR 28. For residents, that can mean safer drives and fewer cars crowding the shoulders.
Paid parking is now part of the summer routine at some beaches, so it's worth planning ahead if you host guests who want to visit Chimney Beach or Secret Harbor.
Smoother pavement and improved drainage on U.S. 50 are a quality-of-life win for Glenbrook, Cave Rock and Zephyr Cove commuters.
For Buyers
Trail access and lake clarity are a big part of why buyers fall in love with the North and East Shore. Projects that protect the lake and improve access support the long-term appeal of the area.
When you tour homes near SR 28 or U.S. 50, ask about seasonal traffic patterns, nearby trailheads and transit stops, and how close a property sits to planned construction.
For Sellers
Proximity to the East Shore Trail, transit and lake access can be a real selling point. Highlight it in your listing with accurate, current details.
If your home is near a future project site, like the Sand Harbor extension or Secret Harbor, be upfront with buyers about known plans and timelines. Transparency builds trust and keeps your sale on track.
Your East Shore Homeowner Checklist for Fall and Winter
- Check NDOT and TTD updates before planning winter travel on U.S. 50 or SR 28.
- Bookmark the Tahoe Fund's East Shore Trail StoryMap to track upcoming trail and parking work.
- Remind guests and short-term renters about paid seasonal parking at Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor.
- Use bear boxes and bear-resistant trash storage at home and at the beach. Bears are active well into fall.
- Walk your property after the first storms to confirm drainage and erosion controls are working.
- If you're thinking of selling in spring, start prep now and note nearby amenity improvements for your listing.
- If you're buying, ask your agent to pull planning information for any project near the homes you're considering.
The Bottom Line on the Lake Tahoe East Shore
The East Shore is changing in ways designed to protect what makes it special: clear water, safe access and that unforgettable drive along the lake.
For homeowners in Incline Village, Glenbrook and along the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, these improvements are worth following closely, especially as the trail extension and Spooner hub move toward construction.
